Description
Introduction The early introduction of Pinus radiata D.Don to New Zealand (Shepherd 1990; Burdon 2001) is similar to and appreciably intertwined with the its introduction into Australia (Wu et al. 2007). From 1859 into the mid-1860s importations were made basically on a specimen-tree scale, from Britain or via Australia. The species thrived so well that by the late 1860s larger-scale importations had begun from California, and are known to have continued until 1882, by when New Zealand plantings could evidently meet the considerable demand for seed.
